Very rarely you are proud of yourself? You don’t let yourself make mistakes? Does it sound familiar for you? Be careful not to get stuck in the perfectionism trap. Self-perfectionism is not a quest for the best. It is the pursuit of the worst in ourselves, the part that tells us that nothing we do will even be good enough – that we should try harder.

Some people consider perfectionism to be an advantage. Others have totally different opinions; they admit that perfectionism is really bad and can destroy their daily life. We can find different statements about perfectionism and all depends on whether we can manage this feature. It may seem that perfectionism could make our life harder. Perfectionists have problems with finishing tasks, because there always is something that they can do better in the task. They have a problem with ending something which they can improve. When something doesn’t go according to their expectations, they always look for the guilt in themselves. They very often compare themselves with other people. The most popular thoughts in their heads are ‘I should’ or ‘I must’. They always need to do something; perfectionists have a problem when someone is critical of them. If more of those symptoms occur in your life maybe this article will be helpful for you.

When you are aware that you are a perfectionist you can use it as an advantage. For instance, perfectionism could be helpful in sport. “Practice makes perfect” do you agree with that? It could be your strength or it also has its downside. On the one side perfectionism is good when you practice. Athletes could be more motivated, work harder than others and they try to be the best. However, perfectionism is not good during the competition. On the other side, athletes with a high level of perfectionism during the competition can struggle with fragile confidence, fear of failure, frustration or lack of trust in their ability. Furthermore this feature could make you more worried about technique skills; you can also overanalyze your performance. The effects of this can be that you want to avoid making mistakes during the performance, which is not good for you. What could happen in the future? For perfectionists mistakes are like ‘a snowball effect’. When they see mistakes they lose confidence. It is not good for them, because confidence is one of the most important factors in sport performance.

Ok, we see how it looks in sport, but what happens when the perfectionism level is too high in daily life? Perfectionists are always busy. Actually they are almost often outside. They don’t like to stay at home, when they do they are always working on something. They also have a problem with work addiction, all the time they want to complete tasks. All day and all night they work hard, but very often they complain about how busy they are. Even during their holiday they need support, because the anxiety doesn’t take a day off. Perfectionism is the effect of a high level of anxiety and the need for control. When you can manage your anxiety, you will be more calm, then you can use perfectionism as advantage. Find a balance between work and leisure time; switch ‘I must’ into ‘I can’. Then life will be easier and you can find more pleasure in life. It is not necessary to be perfect to be unique and special. We are not machines. We have emotions, feelings and needs. It is very important to take care of yourself and then for sure you can achieve more in your private life, in sport or in your career.

How can you overcome perfectionism?

Remember that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. With this in mind try to avoid filling your mind with too many negative thoughts. We can focus only on one emotional thought, so you can choose if it will be a positive or negative thought. If you recognize a negative thought tell yourself ‘Stop!’ and then change it. Breath and stay calm. What is the best advice? Don’t focus on the result, because it causes pressure. Try to think what you can do in the present moment. Then You will notice that the results will come.

Często zdarza ci się czuć, że mógłbyś zrobić coś lepiej?
